Old Salem Historic District
In celebration of Black History Month, St. Philips Heritage Center will host a special day in Salem to highlight the history, art, and culture of African Americans. Come and enjoy a day of storytelling, historic tours, crafts, music, puppetry, food, and shopping. Fun for all ages!
Selected Events/Programs:
- Brothers’ and Sisters’ Amazing Quest: Find out about the enslaved and free African Americans that worked and lived in Salem. Complete your quest and get a prize!
- African broom-making demonstration by Nana Vee Terry, Lydia’s Place
- African paper and loom weaving: Make a paper Kente cloth design!
- Brandy Cornmeal Pound Cake Tasting
- Stitch and Take: Quilting Exhibit and Demonstration by the African American Quilt Circle of Durham. Take home your own quilt square!
- Storytelling: Hear the story of Phoebe, one of the most respected women of the African Moravian church, portrayed by Renee Andrews.
- Enjoy a concert “Showcase of Song” sponsored by the City of Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission (noon). Concert does not require a ticket.
- Book signings by Dr. Anthony Parent and Cheryl Harry
- Food Vendors: Hot Fried Fish by Forsyth Seafood, funnel cakes, and more!
- Visit the retail shops for related crafts, books, and gifts!

$12 Adults / $8 Children (ages 6-16)
After February 15, regular All-In-One ticket prices apply ($23/Adults & $11/Children ages 6-16). Friends of Old Salem and children under 6 enjoy FREE admission. Group Rates are available for groups of 14 or more.
