Winston-Salem Centennial Celebration
We are just four weeks away from the incredible Centennial Celebration that the city of Winston-Salem has planned, all culminating with a beautiful outdoor worship service on Sunday, May 12. We will gather in the Salem College May Dell at 4:00 p.m. for prayers, singing, preaching and a Moravian Lovefeast. The Rev. Sam Stevenson will preach, and Rev. Gary Chapman will speak during the Lovefeast. I’ve attached the service order to give you a snapshot of what it looks like to date.
In particular, though, we wanted to be sure that you knew about two city-wide choirs that are forming and to extend an invitation to you and your choirs:
· CITY-WIDE GOSPEL CHOIR: rehearsing on Saturday afternoons, 3-5pm, May 4 and 11, at Winston-Salem First. Chris Farabee of Macedonia Worship Center will be conducting “Total Praise,” with Larry Jenkins of St. Peter’s World Outreach Center music directing. Contact Terrance Hawkins or Phiphine Moore to sign up or for more information on who is participating: [email protected]
· CITY-WIDE TRADITIONAL CHOIR: rehearsing on Wednesday nights, 6:15-6:45pm, May 1 and 8, at First Presbyterian Church. Michael Dodds of First Presbyterian will be conducting the well-known anthem “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name.” Contact Maria Swedeen to sign up or for more information on who is participating: [email protected]
Certainly, we would love to have your entire choir come as a group to join either choir (or both!). But, we also would want to give you the freedom to simply extend an invitation to your choir to come on their own. We realize that the service falls on Mother’s Day due to the actual date of the original unification: May 9, 1913. Perhaps, though, you could help us encourage people to make this service a wonderful gift to all mothers: celebrating the history and faithfulness of God to our city.
Other groups participating include the Moravian Band, El Buen Pastor Children’s Choir, Vertical Generation Youth Choir, and the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus. We are still hoping a bell choir can join us; email me if you are interested or have suggestions.
Please join us in this wonderful opportunity to join together in worship during such a significant time. For more on the Winston-Salem Centennial Celebration, visit www.ws100years.com
